
Ormond was the daughter Josephine Lab technician, and John Ormond (a stockbroker) who lived in Epsom, Surrey. Ormond is the second of five children for her parents. At first, she attended Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School. There, her first lead roles in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady were noticed. After a single year at art school, she was transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art where she graduated in 1988. Ormond first appeared on British TV in the series Traffik. The series was centered on the illicit heroin trade which was carried out from the middle of the East up to Europe. Ormond played the drug addicted daughter of the lead character, who was a Home Office minister in the UK government fighting heroin imports. This was Ormond's first role and was received with acclaim.
